Percent of household consumption spent on meat and fish (all households) (%)
Definition
Proportion of household food and beverage expenditure spent on meat and fish. Data are obtained from nationally representative household expenditure or consumption surveys.
Interpretation
As income per capita increases, households diversify their food consumption beyond starchy staple foods, into animal-source foods, fruits and vegetables, and processed foods, which are higher priced per calorie. There may be additional variation in this trend due to sociocultural factors and the agro-ecological conditions prevalent in a country.
