Number of people who cannot afford healthy food.
Definition
Number of people with insufficient income to afford a healthy diet, defined by the indicator "Cost of a healthy diet". For the calculation, it is considered that, at most, 46% of household income can be allocated to the purchase of food. The indicator's numerator is the number of residents in households whose per capita income does not cover this cost.
Interpretation
A healthy diet is considered inaccessible when its cost exceeds 52% of daily per capita income. In developing countries, such as Brazil, the limit is lower, at 46%. The larger the proportion of the population able to afford a healthy diet without compromising the acquisition of other essential goods, the greater the food and nutritional security.
