Share of total water withdrawals used for irrigation and livestock production (%)
Definition
Percentage of water withdrawals allocated to irrigation or livestock production. This indicator reflects the proportion of total water use dedicated to food production in comparison to other sectors, such as domestic use, industry, mining, and thermoelectric power generation.
Interpretation
Water is often a limiting factor for agricultural production, and expanding irrigation is one of the main strategies proposed to increase food output. At the same time, water scarcity is already a serious issue in many regions of the world, and this situation is expected to worsen due to climate change and growing demand. Understanding the share of water withdrawals used for irrigation and livestock production helps highlight the need for targeted strategies in regions where these activities are major drivers of water use
