Nitrogen use in agriculture

Level StateAnnual

Definition

Amount of nitrogen used in agriculture, in the form of inorganic fertilizers (chemical or mineral), per hectare of arable land. Includes simple and compound fertilizers.

Interpretation

Fertilizers are an important input for improving agricultural productivity. In regions with less fertile soil, many farmers use fertilizers in such limited quantities that they are insufficient to replenish soil nutrients. However, in other parts of the world, the excessive use of fertilizers can generate environmental problems, such as nitrogen runoff and water contamination. The manufacture and application of fertilizers also contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions.
