Fertilizer consumption

Level StateAnnual

Definition

Amount of plant nutrients used per unit of arable land, including nitrogen, phosphate, and potassium. Traditional animal and plant manure fertilizers are not included.

Interpretation

Fertilizers are an important input for improving agricultural productivity. In regions with less fertile soil, many farmers use fertilizers in such limited quantities that they are insufficient to replenish soil nutrients. However, in other parts of the world, the excessive use of fertilizers can generate environmental problems, such as nitrogen runoff and water contamination. The manufacture and application of fertilizers also contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions.
