MDD (IYCF): Minimum dietary diversity for infants and young children (%)

Level Macro-regional5 years

Definition

Percentage of children 6–23 months of age who consumed foods and beverages from at least five out of eight defined food groups during the previous day.

Interpretation

WHO guiding principles for infant and young child feeding recommend that children aged 6–23 months be fed a variety of foods to ensure that nutrient needs are met. A diet lacking in diversity can increase the risk of micronutrient deficiencies, which may have a damaging effect on children’s physical and cognitive development.
